This page explains who publishes Japan in Data, who is responsible for its content, and the editorial rules every article follows.

Purpose of This Site
Japan in Data is a data-visualization media site that rebuilds Japanese government statistics, official data, and public data from international organizations into a form you can read through charts.
Structures, trends, and distributions that are hard to grasp in text alone are reconstructed with originally designed charts and timelines. Our goal is an information experience where readers can understand at a glance, before reading a single paragraph.
Editorial Policy
The Japan in Data editorial team produces every article according to the following principles. The full procedure, including how figures are compiled and how confidence labels are assigned, is described on our Methodology page.
1. Primary sources only
The data in our articles comes from e-Stat (the portal site of official statistics of Japan), official publications of Japanese government ministries and agencies, and public data from international organizations such as the OECD, the United Nations, the World Bank, and the WHO. News reports and secondary aggregator sites are not used as data sources.
2. A fact-check section in every article
Every article ends with a fact-check section that lists the primary sources used, links to the page where each figure can be verified, and labels each item by how it was confirmed (verified against a primary source, confirmed only through secondary reports, calculated by our team from primary data, or subject to change). Keeping our evidence independently verifiable by readers is a basic editorial commitment.
3. Observation only
Articles describe what the data shows. They do not attribute causes, make predictions, or judge whether a figure is good or bad, and they do not advocate for any position, party, or policy. Where a question is contested, we present the data and leave the interpretation to the reader.
4. Original visualizations
All charts, maps, and timelines in our articles are compiled and drawn in-house by the editorial team from the official data cited beneath each chart. We do not republish visualizations from other sites.
Corrections and Updates
If you find an error, please report it through the contact form. We check the point against the primary source, correct the article if it is wrong, and record the correction at the end of the article. We do not silently edit published figures.
Each topic has one permanent URL. When the official statistics behind an article are finalized or a new annual release is published, we update the same article rather than publishing a new one. The date of the last update is shown at the top of each article.
Data Notes
Figures shown in charts are compiled and edited by the Japan in Data editorial team from the official data cited. Because of rounding, unit conversion, or the aggregation of categories, values may differ slightly from those in the original publication. Preliminary figures are labeled as such and replaced when final figures are released. For any decision that depends on an exact value, please refer to the primary source linked in the fact-check section.

Japan in Data publishes articles in the following five categories.
- Society & Economy: visualizing institutions, taxation, economic indicators, and labor statistics
- Life & Education: visualizing household finances, insurance, pensions, education, parenting, health, and relationships
- Hobbies & Sports: visualizing leisure, recreation, participation, and market size
- Nature & Science: visualizing AI, energy, climate, technology, and the natural world
- World & Geography: visualizing international comparisons, regional distributions, and geopolitics
About Kaede Kobayashi, Our Editor
Articles on Japan in Data are written and narrated by Kaede Kobayashi, the site’s data editor, based in Saitama, Japan. She holds the Grade 2 Financial Planning Technician certification and the Certified Web Writing Professional qualification (both Japan), and is a member of The Japan DataScientist Society. The illustrated “Kaede” avatar is her editorial character; the observations in each article are her own, written under the rules on our Methodology page. Responsibility for the content and accuracy of every article rests with the operating company, Nihon Kigyojoho Co., Ltd.

The company also operates HAKUTAKA (https://hakutaka-shop.jp/), a Japanese-language media site covering the background of news and trending topics.
HAKUTAKA focuses on “why” questions (why something happened), while Kashikapedia and Japan in Data focus on “know” questions (what the data actually shows), organized through visualizations. The sites share an operating company while operating under independent editorial policies.
